Hey folks, recently I've been polishing up an old assignment and was hoping to get some feedback.
It was a lighting and rendering task- we were given a random hero item and asked to create a narrative around it.

Cheers!

I like the rendering! But the narrative is a bit odd to me. The candles in the background create quite a peaceful feeling - they seem like they've been burning for quite a while (lots of melted wax), and the flames are very still. But at the same time there seems to be a large fire in front of the chalice, and the embers flying around create a lot of energy/tension. So the background and foreground seem to be creating two different moods.

What was the narrative and mood you were trying to convey?

The chalice was intended to be part of some sinister ritual -perhaps containing an offering. The mood was meant to be ominous.

I can certainly see what you mean by the mismatch now that I've articulated that!

I think initially I resisted creating too much movement because the render was only supposed to be a snappy 4 seconds. But maybe its worth stretching a bit and pushing the stormy night aspect? Possibly throw in the slightest of dutch angles at the end?

I don't think it's necessary to increase the length... it'd be nice to see if you can achieve your goal within the current time frame. I like the camera move, I think it draws attention to the chalice in the right way. I'd think about changing the background to help support the "ritual/offering/ominous" feeling or setting. I'm sure there are lots of iconic elements you can use to support those ideas, without getting too obvious.
