My workmates making me some Colour, bump and spec maps for me at the moment.
I''m using Maya and the bump randomly comes out really pixally and crap even though it's at 2048X2048
Now this has never happened before, so it gets me thinking what's going on. I played around with bump filter but
that gives me either no bump or a little bit of weird bump, I've never had to use bump filter so I don't really
know that much about it.

Here is a picture of the bump map my workmates making.

Again usually I add bump with not much of a problem, but I dunno it's doing weird things this is the 1st time
I've seen it do this.

Cheer Cheer,

hi gang!! Love seeing Roy climbing that ladder on TV. I feel famous by proxy. I was taught to have bump filter on .1 as a matter of course. I always had bump pretty low too. She does have terrifying pores! What are you rendering at? I think alot of it is spec/lighting and other settings? But I'm not an expert. cheers

When you say you played around with the bump filter, are you refering to the Bump Depth on the bump2d/3d node or the effects/filter on the file node?

Filter is a camera based effect that blurs detail more or less depending on its screen size.

At its default values (1) it tends to blur the crap out of everything in your bump - smushing it out beyond recognition. .1 tends to crisp everything up nicely. putting it on 0 doesn't achieve anything.
whereever you put it - it won't however pixelate anything.

Looking at your texture - I'd guess your biggest problem is your uv layout.
Just because your texture map is 2kx2k doesn't mean you are USING 2000+ pix, just loading them into maya.
you are only using about an eigth of the pixels on your bump map - just those in the centre where the face is.
If this is really an issue (if your camera is gonna get that close) I would suggest reprojecting the uv's to make the face more prominent - the back of the skull doesn't need to be that big.

you DON't need to make the texture res bigger. 2k is prob too big already.

Cheers, for the advice. Yeah I usually never use more than around 1024X1024. This is the only time I've seen that pixelly weirdness come up, I'll do the ol filter and UV layout. I'm giving my notice tomorrow and jet setting it to Europa land spoonish I'll Pm you Jenny and ask the best way of giving notice to the higher ups :D.

chherrR!.

yeah it seems you are only really using about a quater of your UV space for the face, of which you have very few pixels under the nose. res up or pull back your camera and everything should come right.

Heres the WIP Ignore the hair (hair is a bit of a biyatch) it's still extremly WIP, the model needs some smoothen and a bit o tweaking still, I havent messed around with the shader too much other than file textures, also wouldn't mind making an SSS shader for it but if the boss is happy with it I'll be happy with it,

Cheers again for advice.

Hmm.. The propotions on look rather odd, almost as if its stretched. The bottom of the face tapers too much imo. But then this isnt a modelling WIP its a texture WIP, so textures look pretty good.

Looks like you're making progress...can we have a render with a plain lambert, and one with a plain lambert and wireframe to get a better look at your topology?

Sorry for the tangent, but do you have permission to let this work be public? Sounds like you're working for a boss of sorts so would hate for you to be in trouble over it.
