every now and then I will have this problem, when I hit render I can clearly see the image is being rendered. But at the end when it finishes, the render window just become black, and there is a pink warning line next to the script editor says selected region is too small.

Has anyone else have encountered this problem?

should also mention that, I can also solve the problem by messing around the render settings changing preview to production or production to preview. Basically set it back to default. But I never know why, it's been hindering me everytime when I try to set up my own render settings.

Finally found why is that, in mental ray, contour render section. There is an option called hide source, basically when you render toon line for your model you turn it on so it only render the outline of the model. After having played around my render, I sometimes forgot to tick it off. This hide source option also can not be overridden by the render layer.
