More habitats. Half day limit on each. Mildly to not very successful.

I like that last pic! Have you seen the stuff about those 'first humans to mars'? They had pics of what their living modules would look like. Pretty underwhelming. I can imagine they'll go crazy pretty quickly, and then eat each other when the food starts running out.

Haha yeah man, I think I have. Kind of like little igloo things. Yeah they totally would. its hard to imagine what it would be like really. I mean those modules would be the ONLY place you could ever be. Its not like you just take some camping gear a go all native or anything. maybe a bigger first colony would be easir. more physical space and social stimuli.

Qahiran Mahjaris (Martian Bedouin)

Image

"Al-Qahira is the name for Mars in Arabic, and Malaysian, and Indonesian. The latter
two langauges got it from the former; look at a globe, then, and see how far the Arabs'
religion spread. The whole middle of the world, from West Africa to the West Pacific. And
most of that in a single century. Yes, it was an empire in its time; and like all empires, after
death it had a long half-life.
The Arabs who live out of Arabia are called Mahjaris, and the Arabs who came to
Mars, the Qahiran Mahjaris. When they arrived on Mars a good number of them began to
wander Vastitas Borealis ("The Northern Badia") and the Great Escarpment. These
wanderers were mostly Bedouin Arabs, and they traveled in caravans, in a deliberate
recreation of a life that had disappeared on Earth. People who had lived in cities all their
lives went to Mars and moved around in rovers and tents. The excuses for their ceaseless
travel included the hunt for metals, areology, and trade; but it seemed clear that the
important thing was the travel, the life itself."

Extract from Kim Stanley Robinson's 'Red Mars'.

The ballast for Robinson's Martian elevator gets christened 'Clarke'. A nod to the original architect of the idea, Arthur C. Clarke.

More rover stuff. This is not an idea of Robinson's, I just think it it would make a cool tool in the stories context.

Elevator ballast designs.

Trying to explore what the asteroid would look like after most of it's been mined and processed into the cable.

Fashioned into shapes? Honeycombed?

To Mars! Temporarily. But I'm back now.

And I brought you guys some souvenirs back to.

Looking up a Sheffield thoroughfare towards the space elevator anchoring complex. Relatively high socioeconomic prefecture.

Mid 21st century Kalashnikov ideas. These models are self oxidizing, for use in noncombustible atmospheres (like Mars or in space).

Some have built in oxidation tanks, while others are customized to take oxygen feeds form walker life support (you could also adapt old Terran weapons this way if you can't get hold of weapons designed for Mars).

Well as far as the book goes, I've officially run out of time for designing, and I'm now frantically doing the layout. As soon as I've sent it off to the priters I'll chuck up a link to a pdf version if anyones interested.

In saying this though there's still so many things I want to illustrate (as always) so I'm gonna carry this project on. Again, I encourage everyone to add any Red Mars work they've done to this thread.

Cheers!

Wow. Just wow. Came back to NZCGI specifically to check on this thread and it did not disappoint. You've outdone yourself, this stuff is hawt! Love the concepts for the periscope thing that the driver is looking through. My favourites are the last two (the purple one and the last one). Personally I like the purple one but I have a feeling the last one is a safer match to all the other stuff you've done. But there is something very fresh about the purple one.

Keep it up :)
