Well... I work at MDS... and I've been there for 4 years because the courses are pretty damn good and the tutors (in all the courses - Games, Graphic Design, Visual Effects etc etc) are pretty top notch. I'd say an advantage is more bang for your bucks I guess. There are 7 tutors within the 3D and Advanced 3D courses at MDS, and each has specific skills. If you compare the NZQA levels of MDS vs Natcoll, the advanced 3D course at Natcoll is level 6, whereas the standard 3D course at MDS is level 6... the MDS 'advanced' course is level 7 and gets really technical. Weta has hired a bunch of those guys over the years. They do a lot of team projects and research projects. Always best to check out reels from the schools and talk to people who have been there recently. Massey in Wellington is like 3 or 4yrs and I'm not sure how much time is spent on 3D, but they have some great design tutors there. Out of those 3 schools you mentioned, for studying 3D I'd say MDS is the best, then Massey... and Natcoll last.

yeah i had a look at massey and they didnt seem to have any specialised courses for 3d animation.... hey thanks for the info it helped alot....well im too late for this year but id like to pay off some debts b4 i stared anyway lol still not a 100% though i think i could do with another course as self teaching is quite a slow process but would prefer not to add another $9000 to my already $15000 student loan... so maybe see you next year :P

not yet but if i keep progressing as fast as i am now then i may not need too i'd still have to ask for advice for stuff on here... but then a course would greatly aid me but the it's another $9000 on top of my student loan

Hi Rabid,

You have been making good progress on the basics of modelling. From memory that section is only a few weeks of the MDS course. If you want to do 3D just for fun then teaching yourself could be the way to go - if you are looking at it as a career then I highly recommend doing the course. Like anything you want to take seriously its better to learn the right way to do things and then self develop after that - rather than the other way around where you have to at some point undo all the bad habits you have developed.(Sounds like this has happened to you already with modelling)

The technical skills in the course are the basic stuff, the principles behind them are important to learn and understand as well. This is where the tutors are great. Learning the principles of animation, lighting, rendering etc would be a nightmare to try put together and understand by surfing the web.

But again - if its just for fun then definitely save yourself the money and enjoy the journey.
