Nope. You have to find your own accommodation. But Auckland central (where MDS is) is full of apartment buildings. Lots of students living in town too, so I think you can find some good prices.

Just don't take advice from MDS, they will send you to UniLodge, which is really crazy expensive. nz flat finder is a great way to go. I'm really thrilled with the flatmate I found on there, rent's very fair too :D

If I remember correctly there's an enrollment process which involves handing in a portfolio of sample Artwork so that MDS can make up their own minds which applicants to accept, so it's not just a matter of deciding and you're in. Having used Maya or any other 3D app might show you have an interest, though it's probably not as important as showing you actually have some artistic ability. If you don't have much in the way of 2D art samples, it might be a good time to get drawing.

But yes, getting into MDS - very very cool. Go for gold. :)

It's not 'difficult' to get into MDS, you just need to show you have a reasonable artistic eye... whether through drawing, painting, sculture, photography or 3D (etc). Being good with computers helps, but it's not what we look for. If your art skills are lacking, you'll either be told to go learn art and come back with a better portfolio, or if you're "not quite" good enough, you might be able to do our new Digital Creativity course which teaches a variety of skills to help improve your portfolio. Then if your work is good, you can do the MDS 3D course.

Try to have something other than just photography. I think photography requires the biggest leap out of the disciplines I mentioned above. Drawing, painting or sculpting are very hands on and require you to physically transfer an image or idea into another medium... which is exactly what 3D is. So if you're 'good' at drawing/painting/sculpture, then going into 3D is usually a relatively painless step. I think if you're portfolio consists of only photography, it would have to be really awesome stuff.
