Hey NZCGI peepz,

Its come to that time of the year where I have found a new pet project. This story has evolved from a range of idea's. Basic outline is:

A story about 2 young boys Jack (6 years old) & Daniel (Toddler) who create a ship to fly into space.

..........................

Currently the story is being developed to a point we are happy with the story all we know is we definitely want to show the creative imagination the comes with being 6 years old. We also want to show connection between the older brother and his younger brother who aspires to do everything his brother does. Right now everything is in Pre-Prod. Always looking for artists to want to help with Mood Boards and Asset Modelling. Aim is to have this film ready for next years short film festivals. This is a full CG project and below are some of the original concept art pieces. If you are interested in helping in anyway please feel free to contact me kenworx@hotmail.com.

original story and concept art by Kiri Jones :-)

Design references range from Despicable Me, Wreck it Ralph, The Incredibles and Up.

But yeah I thought I'd share this with NZCGI. I'll share our progress here.

Good luck! I see you removed the longer story outline, but from what I read it sounded like a nice concept.

I thought I would share some updates on the characters. Wondering if anyone knows if short animated films fall into copyright issues with well known characters like the ones on Daniels outfits.

No idea about the copyright thing. I get the feeling that if you portray a kid in a costume, then you're not actually saying your character is the Flash, or Batman, so it doesn't seem like an issue. If you actually had Batman as a character, then you might have problems.

And you can always change the symbols slightly, so they look costumy, and not 'movie accurate' I guess.

I thought as much really looking forward to rigging these guys. If I can get away with it I am going to try and model, texture and rig the 'Daniel' Character with all the costumes in one rig. Any warnings before I do this ? :-D

Just be careful of file size. Each piece of geo that gets bound will increase the file size quite a lot. But otherwise keeping all the costumes on one rig should be fine.

Decided to give this model ago today. Fun and frustrating.

Basically spent 3 hours and still working in proxy. I learnt this workflow early in my career and it wasn't until I was working at Oktobor that I realized how useful it could be. Proxy enables me to work low poly whiles updating my 'semi' hi poly mesh which will eventually become the mesh that is actually bound and considered your 'anim' mesh. We have proxy, anim and render switches. Also proxy is easier to UV, easier to manipulate. And if you didn't know when it does the smooth mesh on the mirrored proxy it evenly distributes your poly's try's to fix your tri's and nGon's . After this is modelled I'll take it through and extensive use on Zbrush and hope it comes out with a more refined character :-D

This is also the so called plan for all the rigs. Going to create a tool that will enable me to automate most of the generic set up. For example I have a proxy switch tool that lets me quickly create a switch between (proxy, anim and render) this is basically an integer with labels that switch the invisibility on and off except its automated with a little UI I'll attach a screen grab of it tomorrow :-D
