NZCGI – 1 Year Anniversary Competition.

After a year of rolling around and discovering our fingers and toes, we’re finally crawling, tumbling and panning! The forum has put on some pounds and is now eating solid shaded foods. So to celebrate this glorious achievement, we’re throwing ourselves a birthday bash in the form of a super cool competition… and you’re all invited! If you’re wondering what to bring, just read the paragraph below. Yeah... I ate the cake already.

Competition Theme: Harbinger of Misfortune

Since our birthday is on the ever so unlucky Friday 13th, you are to create a 3D CG model of an ORGANIC Character or Creature who exudes negativity. The Character/Creature should be someone or something that you would definitely get a bad vibe from if you walked past them in the street – without them appearing blatantly evil.
The setting is entirely up to you. There are no limitations on what you can create
*except for what is outlined in the NZCGI Code of Conduct:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=322

Preference will be given to the Character/Creature which
a) Most creatively interprets the theme
b) Most strongly generates a feeling of negativity without the Character/Creature appearing blatantly evil
c) Has the most original concept

Duration:
The competition begins Friday 20th February, 2009 and runs for 15 weeks.

The final submission deadline is: 11.30pm, Friday 5th June, 2009.

Creation:
Your final entry must be a 3D computer generated model. You can use any 3D program, including (but not limited to) Maya, 3ds Max, Lightwave, Blender, Zbrush, Mudbox etc.

Your final model can be detailed with displacement or normal maps since the final submission will be a render of the final model.

You can light the model however you wish, using indirect lighting or your own light rig etc. You can do an occlusion pass if you wish – this can help define details in the model.

Do NOT texture your model. It must only have only one base colour.

You must create your model from scratch. This must be shown through the regular submission of Work In Progress images of your model (as outlined in the next section).

You may draw inspiration from other artworks, but any entry that is considered to be too similar to any existing artwork will be disqualified.

You are NOT allowed to submit any commercial work.

NZCGI will NOT retain ownership of any of the submitted works. All entrants will retain copyright of all their submissions.

**UPDATE 23/02/08**

Your entry must have 30% visible organic on final submission AND during your display (360 turn around) 80% organic must be shown.

i.e. You can have a suit of armour provided at least 30% of the characters body is visible, e.g head, hands etc. During the turn around, at some point, another 50% of the armor is removed to show your organic model underneath (total 80% visible organic character). This means 20% organic of your model can be covered at all times (so you can model boots and no feet).

Submission:
Your final submission will comprise of:

a) 4 high quality digital JPEG images (which best show off you model):
Max resolution: 1600w x 1200h pixels
Min resolution: 1000w x 1000h pixels

b) A 360 turntable render no smaller than 768 x 576 pixels.
Format: Quicktime
Compression: H.264

You MUST archive all of your individual files into one single archive file before uploading.
Please archive with one of the following types: 7zip, Zip, Rar.

IMPORTANT: - The max upload size is 40mb.
- The max upload time is 30mins before timeout. This should be plenty of time on a broadband connection.

You must submit regular Work In Progress images during the competition so that we can clearly see the steps you have taken to create your art work.
Your Work In Progress images help other members learn from your techniques and helps encourage interaction between members.
Posting all your work late in the competition may result in your entry being disqualified.

To submit your final entry, simply attach it at the end of your topic – CLEARLY identifying it as your final submission.

Also separately upload a final rendered JPEG to your last post for the other members to see your final artwork.
* Remember there is a 1mb upload limit for images, so you might have to down res your image if you’re thinking of attaching one of your final submission images.

You may submit multiple entries, but each entry must be significantly different and not just a slight variation of the others.
You must also create a new topic for you new entry with separate Work In Progress images.

How to Enter:
You must be a registered member of NZCGI to enter.

Log in and start a New Topic in the ‘Regular Competitions’ forum:
viewforum.php?f=43

The title of your New Topic should read:
NZCGI 1YEAR ANNIVERSARY Competition – your Username (or real name)

Remember to post regular updates.

Important Rules:
- All entrants agree to let NZCGI use their final image submissions to showcase the Competitions Forum, by doing such things as placing final submitted images in the front page banners or in other areas of the forum. The images will not be used for any other purpose by NZCGI or used in any media outside of the NZCGI website without prior permission from the artist.

- Only people currently living in New Zealand are eligible for prizes and you must also:
a) Be a resident of New Zealand
OR
b) Hold a current work or study permit/visa for New Zealand

The smooth option makes things awesome. Just use it. Set to 10 divisions.

Onix, why dont you model a little cute street rat, then at the VERY last minute turn it's smile upsidedown? Then you will be happy happy happy ...sad.

Mean I'm keen. I'm glad it's not Inorganic modeling, mixes things up a little and Sharpo doesn't get an advantage :D

Awesome. Ive been wanting to get back into the muddy-box-sculpy-dealy, this should be a decent excuse for it.
