you definitely have excellent and solid art skills, you must kicked ass in AUT, it's hard to believe you are not working for anyone. I guess this is just the case you have to face in New Zealand, too few companies.
Do you do 3d as well?

I'm currently working at Binary Star as a concept artist and was freelancing the years previously. Nah i sucked at Uni, pretty much just floated around being an anti-social dick. None of the Uni courses cater purely for illustration just graphic design in general so it never did click for me. Nah, i know nothing about 3D but the 3d dudes at work have got me interested especially with the cool shit they make but all that technical shit intimidates me to be honest.

When I first 'saw' a 3D program in 1998, I'd never even used a computer!! I had to take a beginners course in computers one night a week just to figure out how to turn one on and off! Scared the crap out of me having to drop my previous trade and figure out what a lot of young people already knew, but sooooooo glad i did it. If I can figure out what the buttons do, then anyone can!

“When I first 'saw' a 3D program in 1998, I'd never even used a computer!! ”WOW SHOCKING, i believe that year i was staying at home playing starcraft all night when my grandma tried to sneak upon me to see whether I 'd done my homework. In china, if you are a good boy, it used to be a bad thing to play video games. My mum still complained about how I wanted to do 3d animation, which in her opinion is like playing video game.

Ok quite off the topic, I m from a "third" world country and my family was one of those not very rich or hi-tech, and I first used a computer with a system called dos in 1996. And the first game i played off a floppy drive is called lion king, that brings me back memories. Anyway, from what I heard, many new zealanders start using computers during 70s, at least by 80s(but i believe your story).

If you were talking about the internet I would easily believe you, since new zealand is still at a very Paleolithic stage in terms of internet even after all the third world countries decided to give the unlimited internet a shot. And out of all the things people protest every day, people seems to be perfectly happy with that. I remember my flatmates used to have this flat meeting about me using up 5gb of data a month, and ask me" hey what do you use 5gb data for? i can't use 5gb for a year."

Off topic again, I am sorry to spam this on your topic rusty, respect your work a lot, it's just that i need to get this internet thing off my chest once for a while. ;)

Worzel, Yeah, i suppose i shouldn't be too intimidated by that stuff besides i could find great uses with 3d to help with my 2d work, especially with shadows and lighting instead of having to figure that shit out in my head all the time just make a rough mock up in 3d and light it to give an accurate reference point to work from.

Onix, let it out boy, let it out ;p nah no worries mate. I only started using a computer in 2002 because i saw a painting by Jon Foster which he had done digitally! which shocked the f**k outta me, you can paint like that on a f**kin computer? what the faaaah! thought photoshop was just for photos!, heh! I mean i heard of pen tooling then filling with a colour but this cat was full on simulating brush strokes with something called a tablet? what the f**k is this shit? where can i buy this magic device? That's how closed off and naive i was to everything digital before then.

cheers fellas...

You must mean the ballet, cos I know you are still a model-slash-animator.

Some progress sketches for the CGNZ competition going for a steampunk setting with mine, and a Devine Nibru sketch, one of CA.org's best known internet memes.

Chur!

~J

PS. Entry list for the CGNZ competition is a little empty atm so if your up to it have a go guys :)
