Condor!

Rig is "in progress"... but the pic below shows where I'm up to. I still have to do the feet, and 'neck' control.

The mesh is not complete, but is close enough for rigging. I'll swap out the mesh later when I have a better version, but this will be fine for animation testing for now.

Making the wings fold in is crazy difficult, so I'm trying to fudge it as much as possible.

wow, some bird animation down the line, would be great to see those, and for the feathers,do you have separate controls.just for the feathers, rather then the wings.

The thought of individual feather control did cross my mind, but that may come further down the line. I can imagine it would be nice to be able to pose a single feather when needed, especially for more cartoon style animation.

At the moment, I've broken the wing into 4 groups for animation.
- Rotating the controls causes the feathers to automatically spread and collapse when the wing opens and closes, as shown in the first image below.
- There is an Curl attribute on each wing control that curls the nearest clump of feathers, as kinda shown in the other 2 images.

Feathers spread when wing 'opens'.

Feathers can Curl up or down.

Condor rig finally finished... well, to the point where you can animate it flying. The mesh has no eyes, but they'll come later!

Naturally I came across a problem with my Lion and Wolf rigs, which I didn't notice before. Nothing that would cause any issues animating, but one that still needing fixing - so that took all day today, of course!

Anyway, 3 creature rigs done. Tomorrow I'll animate the Condor flying and post it up.

In the meantime... a pose...

8-)

The spreading pose looks quite convincing! :nodding:

Is it a challenging task to make the wings folded and closed (ie. when the bird is landed)? I remembered attempts at making bird rigs to do that before, and never got that pose figured out without excessive amount of hacking.

I like the lion animation too, especially the mass and momentum feel to it.

Nice.

Hey Shortndeadly, yeah, the wings were difficult to close... actually, it's the feathers that are a pain. Because I've got stiff feathers they just stick out on weird angles - so lots of Driven Keys to correct the problem feathers. I got is as good as I could... but they still look rigid because they are rigid! They can bend and curl, but I think without all the little feathers wrapping around the surfaces it will never look right.

First animation - a condor walking! They are large birds and have a fair deal of weight shifting when they walk. Their bodies twist a fair deal too, so the back end swings left and right with each step. I also found it looks kinda like a 'sneak' cycle, in that the body rotates up as the leg reaches forwards, and then the weight comes down and forwards onto the front leg after 'contact'. Kinda cool.

Vid below...

Yep, I certainly do want to animate something like that! And I will... but just a tad busy right now.

That's awesome Roger. I've been debating doing a bird for a while now, in my head folding the wings was always just having controllers that can manually make the motion then using driven keys on the group nodes above the controllers to automate it - then a few more to correct any problem geometry. Probably isn't that simple, though.. now I have to give it a go. :)

That's exactly how I've done it. Group nodes on the controllers to automate the closing/opening action, and driven keys also on the feathers to position them at the same time.

Ah-ha so I was right! I guess... :)

I've got a bird rig coming up too now since I had to give it a go, tell you what though, rigging wings is tedious work. The fun leaks out soon as you've figured out what you're doing... at least that's my experience, so much repetition in it. If I complete it I'll make a thread and give animation a go, although I can barely animate a person let alone a bird

There's such a massive shortage of wing rigging stuff out there that I'm almost tempted to make a tutorial on it once I'm done. Back to it!

Thats so cool haha i did a pug dog model that i could imagine walking like that. if you want the model to play around with its already low poly and from what i remember has decent topology .
