I'm thinking of doing a Maori burial chest (Waka tupapaku), or box to hold a Mokomokai (preserved head). I've read that Maori use to keep the bones of important chiefs or family members in a chest, to be brought out on occassion. They also kept the preserved heads of both friend and foe,the heads of enemy chiefs displayed on posts.
My story is of the rediscovery of a buried chest containing the head of a powerful maori prophet, taken during a war between two tribes. It has been lost for a hundred years, and until it is returned the two tribes will never be at peace. The head is said to still predict the future at the price of a human sacrifice.

Now which to model, the head or the waka tupapaku?

A few drawings..I like the carved box, but then after looking at burial chests I really like the character of these.

Some nice designs there - I like the carved boxes. I'll just mention that you should avoid modelling the 'head' since this comp is 'hard surface' modelling.

Cool idea, and it looks like it's open to lots of cool little details and such

Really liking this idea. You're a fast worker. On to modelling already.

Nice. It reminds me of the cube from Hell Raiser lol. Looking forward to seeing more of the modeling and zbrush work.
